PREDATOR HUNTING: WHERE TO HUNT COYOTES
Hunting predators will require some advance scouting. I recommend all predator hunters to go out and walk the areas you plan on hunting. Look at water holes for tracks and scat. Look on dirt/gravel roads for scat and tracks in the washes. If you have alot of signs in these areas this is where I would consider calling. While out walking, try to find areas you would like to set up your stands. I recommend you have different areas picked out because of the wind. If the wind is out of the South – where would you set up? If it is out of the West, then where? It is a good idea to have multiple areas to set up, I can’t tell you how many times I went to some of my favorite spots and couldn’t hunt them because of the wind.
If you are going to use a shotgun then you can hunt in heavier covered areas. What I have found is that predators come in easier in heavy covered areas then they do in wide open country. Predators come in where there is the most coverage and sometimes when they come to an opening they will
hang up and need a little coaxing to get them to come in to the opening. I am not going to confess to being an expert on when and where predators will come in because I have hunted areas I thought looked like great places to hunt with no luck and moved to areas I wasn’t impressed with and had good luck. I hunt the openings early in the morning and late in the afternoon and hunt heavier covered areas during the day.
Another thing you will need to consider is what kind of gun are you going to use. The reason this is important is because if you are going to use a center fire rifle you will need an area that has a lot of open range.
